Art
In art, students develop lifelong critical thinking and problem solving skills. They also learn how to communicate non-verbally using imagery and color.
In sixth grade art, students explore a variety of media as they continue to build their skills in drawing, painting, graphics, and sculpture. Theory is introduced to further elaborate upon ideas about color, perspective, and design.
In intermediate art, students focus on further developing art skills, vocabulary, creativity, and concepts of design. Two-dimensional lessons may include painting, drawing, layout, and printmaking. Three-dimensional projects may include functional or sculptural ceramic experiences.
In advanced art, students express themselves creatively through drawing, graphics, sculpting, painting, 3D ceramic sculpture, and mixed media to develop art skills and concepts. Composition, technique, the elements and principles of design, and attention-to-detail are explored.
Our Art Teachers for 23-24 are Mr. Johnson and Ms. Mathys
Band
Directors: Chris Brown and Danielle Roberts
The Kimbrough Middle School Band was named the Texas Bandmaster’s Association Exemplary Middle School Band Program in 2016.
Band begins in the sixth grade at Kimbrough with 8 Beginning Band classes. Characteristic tone production is the major emphasis of the beginning band program. Beginning band students perform in two concerts, at the Mesquite ISD Solo & Ensemble Contest, and in two band festivals.
Students who successfully complete their first year are enrolled in one of the three Kimbrough Advanced Bands. The students' individual development continues through participation in the Mesquite ISD All-City Band, the TMEA Region III All-Region Bands, and the Mesquite ISD Solo & Ensemble Festival. The Kimbrough Advanced Band has received UIL Sweepstakes awards in 19 out of the last 20 years, and is a consistent First Division recipient at festivals throughout the DFW metroplex.
One of the greatest accomplishments of the Kimbrough band program is the outstanding success that our students achieve in the Poteet High School Band. The Poteet Band is a consistent participant at the UIL State Marching Contest, and is a three-time State Champion. The Poteet Honors Band is the 2008 TMEA Class 4A Honor Band and is a recipient of the John Phlip Sousa Foundation Sudler Flag. The Poteet Band program was named the TBA Exemplary High School Band Program in 2009 which with Kimbrough's selection in 2016 was the first time in the award's history that both a high school and a middle school feeder have both been recipients of this award.
Choir
Students in the vocal music program are challenged to grow musically and vocally to their greatest potential. We require you to respect your directors, fellow musicians, the music performed, and the work each of us do to become the best choir(s) possible. We also expect you to show responsibility by trying your best at all rehearsals and performances. If you do these things, your reward will be an experience unlike any other you have in school, encompassing pride, joy, feelings of accomplishment, success, fun and self satisfaction!

Orchestra
Kimbrough Middle School Orchestras are comprised of 3 Beginner Orchestra Classes (6th grade), split by instrument type, an Intermediate Orchestra (7th grade) and an Advanced Orchestra (8th grade). While these groups are primarily based on grade levels, they are not strictly bound to that standard.
Both the Intermediate Orchestra and Advanced Orchestra groups have consistently won UIL Sweepstakes from year to year and also compete in other festivals. The Intermediate Orchestra has consistently made the top ratings and won the "Best in Class" award at Sandy Lake Music Festival and Pride of Texas Music Festival. The Advanced Orchestra has competed as both a Symphony Orchestra and String Orchestra at the Peak Festival and won the top rating from year to year as well as receiving the "Best in Class Award" several times and the "Overall Best Orchestra" at the Festival.
